Violence Erupts Around West Indian American Day Parade in Brooklyn: At Least 5 Shot, 1 Slashed, 1 Stabbed
BROOKLYN, New York | September 1, 2025 – The West Indian American Day Parade in Brooklyn ended with multiple violent incidents on Monday, leaving at least five people shot, one person slashed, and another stabbed, according to authorities and eyewitness reports.
The first shooting was reported around 5:37 p.m. near 1098 Eastern Parkway between Schenectady and Utica Avenues. A woman was grazed in the buttocks and transported to Kings County Hospital, while a man was shot in the leg.
At Eastern Parkway and Utica Avenue, police responded to a man slashed in the face. The victim ran into the Utica subway station for help and was transported to an area hospital. No arrests have been made.
Another shooting was reported near Eastern Parkway and Classon Avenue, where a man was shot in the shoulder and hospitalized in stable condition. A second man, also shot in the shoulder, later walked into the same hospital to report his injuries.
A third shooting occurred at Nostrand Avenue and Sterling Street, outside Yard Pot Restaurant and Bakery. Police confirmed a man had been shot in the leg and neck; he was transported in critical condition.
The NYPD deployed its largest force of the year, exceeding New Year’s Eve and July 4th, with thousands of officers, helicopters, drones, and double-line barricades along Eastern Parkway. The heightened presence follows last year’s fatal shooting and other violent incidents in prior years.
