“That Pissed Me Off”: Encampment Resident Responds to Trump’s Tent Comments Ahead of Sweep
August 13, 2025 – Washington, D.C.
Residents of a homeless encampment in Washington, D.C., say they are preparing for a scheduled site cleanup set for 10 a.m. on Wednesday, August 14, according to notices posted by the D.C. Department of Health and Human Services.
The notices, taped to tents at the site, state that the area will be cleared and that any property not removed in time will be subject to removal and possible disposal. The cleanup is part of a city process to remove encampments deemed public safety or health hazards.
Willy, a resident of the camp, criticized President Donald Trump’s recent comments about not wanting to see tents on city streets. “He said he didn’t wanna see tents on his streets — yeah, that pissed me off,” Willy said. He added that he has been offered storage for his belongings, which he believes will help while he searches for a new place to stay.
Another resident, George, who owns a white pit bull named Blue, said he is unsure of his next steps. “I don’t know what I’ll be doing now,” he told reporters.
City officials say the cleanup process is coordinated by multiple agencies and includes outreach to connect displaced residents with shelter and services.
