From Emergency to Permanent? Trump Wants Long-Term Control of D.C. Law Enforcement
August 13, 2025 – Washington, D.C.
President Donald Trump said Wednesday he plans to push for permanent federal oversight of the Washington, D.C., police department, following recent steps to increase law enforcement presence in the capital.
Earlier in the week, Trump ordered the deployment of National Guard troops to the city and declared a public safety emergency, shifting control of the Metropolitan Police Department to federal authorities. National Guard personnel have been positioned on D.C. streets as part of the order.
The current emergency authorization is set to expire in 30 days. After that, congressional approval would be required for any continuation. Trump said he intends to ask lawmakers to approve a “long-term” arrangement granting federal control over the city’s police force.
