New Jersey man, Initially hailed as HERO – accused of setting deadly house fire that killed elderly neighbor
December 11 2025 New Jersey – A New Jersey resident who once told police he tried to pull his elderly neighbor from a burning home has now been charged with causing the fire that killed her, according to officials.
William Ahle, 70, was taken into custody Wednesday after a SWAT team entered his Fanwood home. Prosecutors say he is accused of starting the July 25 blaze that left 74-year-old Virginia Cranwell dead inside her second-floor bedroom on Kempshall Terrace.
Ahle previously reported the fire himself, telling 911 operators he saw smoke coming from Cranwell’s home around 1:30 a.m. He told first responders he had been out walking his dog, noticed the open garage door, and ran inside attempting to reach Cranwell before intense flames drove him back. He suffered burn injuries and was treated at the Burn Center at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston.
Fire crews extinguished the blaze in roughly 20 minutes, but Cranwell was found unresponsive and was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators later determined the fire had been intentionally set, and the Union County Medical Examiner ruled her death a homicide.
Ahle is now charged with first-degree murder, first-degree felony murder, first-degree burglary, and second-degree aggravated arson. Residents told reporters they were stunned to learn he had become the primary suspect months after the fatal fire.
