According to council officials, public comment was closed because the topic was not on the meeting agenda. Protesters continued shouting from the audience, calling for New Orleans to declare city-owned property “ICE-free zones” and to formally restrict cooperation between local government and federal immigration agencies.

When the group refused to leave the chamber, the council recessed the meeting. Law enforcement officers then moved in and removed several protesters, physically carrying at least one person out of the room, according to video recorded inside the chamber.

The demonstration came one day after federal authorities launched Operation Catahoula Crunch, a large-scale immigration enforcement initiative in southeast Louisiana involving U.S. Border Patrol, ICE, and state and local agencies
