Car crashes into Chabad-Lubavitch World Headquarters in Brooklyn; hate crime probe launched

January 28 2026 BROOKLYN, NEW NEW YORK CITY — A car crashed into the rear entrance of the world headquarters of the Chabad-Lubavitch movement in Brooklyn on Wednesday night, prompting a hate crime investigation by police.

The incident occurred around 8:46 p.m. at the building in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn. Police said a vehicle struck the rear door of the building, reversed, and hit the same door a second time.

NYPD police commissioner said officers were already stationed at the location when they heard a commotion at the entrance. When they responded, they observed the vehicle strike the door, reverse, and strike it again. Officers ordered the driver out of the vehicle and arrested him. His name has not been released.
Police said there were no injuries.

The incident occurred during Yud Shevat, a major Chabad holiday that commemorates the leadership of Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak Schneersohn, the sixth Rebbe of the Lubavitch movement, and marks the anniversary of his death in 1950
