1 Dead, 14 Injured After Gas Explosion Triggers Four-Alarm Fire in Bronx High-Rise

January 24 2026 BRONX, N.Y. — One person was killed and at least 14 others were injured after a gas explosion sparked a massive four-alarm fire on the top floors of a high-rise apartment building in the Bronx early Saturday, according to fire officials.

The blast ignited shortly after midnight inside a NYCHA building at 3485 Bivonia Street, with flames shooting from windows on the 16th floor and spreading across the top two floors of the building.

Video from the scene shows a large fireball bursting from the upper windows as thick smoke poured into the night sky. Several residents were seen standing in their windows, signaling and calling for help as firefighters worked to reach the upper floors.

FDNY officials said crews evacuated more than 150 apartments as the fire spread through the building.

A civilian, who has not been identified, was pronounced dead at the scene. Fourteen people were transported to area hospitals, including one person listed in critical condition, according to FDNY Chief Kathleen Knuth.
