Off-duty NYPD Sergeant Kills Driver in Wrong-Way, Head-On Crash on Taconic State Parkway: Police

January 23 2026 MOUNT PLEASANT, New York – An off-duty NYPD sergeant was driving the wrong way on the Taconic State Parkway late Thursday when her vehicle struck another car head-on, killing the other driver, according to State Police.

Sgt. Tiffany Howell, 47, an 18-year NYPD veteran, was driving a 2021 Infiniti southbound in the northbound lanes around 11:40 p.m. when she collided with a 2024 Toyota. The Toyota’s driver, 61-year-old Peekskill resident Manuel Boitel, was transported to Westchester Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, authorities said. Howell, who lives in Warwick, was taken to the same hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Charges had not been immediately filed.
