Street Standoff Explodes as Protesters Try to Halt Federal Agents’ Exit in Chinatown amid Rumored ICE Raid
Clashes erupted in Lower Manhattan on Saturday as protesters confronted police outside a parking garage where federal agents were already staged amid rumors of a planned immigration raid, according to police and witnesses.
The demonstration began around 10:45 a.m. at Centre and Hester Streets on the edge of Chinatown. Protesters gathered at the entrance of the garage while federal agents remained inside; the only units arriving were NYPD officers and members of the Strategic Response Group responding to the growing crowd.
NYPD placed metal barricades outside the garage, but they quickly became part of the confrontation – shoved back and forth between officers and anti-ICE protesters during repeated standoffs. The tension held for nearly an hour as more people arrived.
Additional shoving between police and protesters spilled into live traffic as the federal vehicles drove off at speed.
The NYPD confirmed arrests but did not specify how many. The Department of Homeland Security did not immediately comment on whether any raid had been planned.
