Migrants Sleeping Outside Intake Center as NYC Temperatures Drop Below Freezing
November 29th, 2023 – Manhattan, NY: After hundreds of migrants flooded an East village re-intake center to receive a shelter space, some are still sleeping outside as temperatures hit 29 degrees in NYC.
Many asylum seekers forced to reapply for temporary housing after the 30 day shelter cap lined the sidewalk on East 7th Street near Tompkins Square Park in Manhattan.
Some migrants have even been waiting multiple days for a chance at getting housing again. One person we spoke with on the line, a French speaking Senegalese man in the United States for a month now, had been waiting since 8 a.m. Monday morning and decided to sleep outside the registration center to try again when they open in the morning with other migrants.
