Supporters Rally for Letitia James at Foley Square; Confrontation Erupts as Event Ends

October 10 2025 MANHATTAN, New York – Supporters gathered at Foley Square for the “Hands OFF Tish James” rally organized by the Working Families Party, following the indictment of New York Attorney General Letitia James by a prosecutor appointed under former President Donald Trump.

The rally drew elected officials, candidates, and activists who defended James and condemned what they called a politically motivated prosecution. Among those who spoke were Public Advocate Jumaane Williams, City Comptroller Brad Lander, and Assemblymember Zohran Mamdani.

Tensions rose after the event as counterprotesters chased Mamdani while he was leaving the area, shouting “Antisemite.” One of the counterprotesters was seen pushing a flag into another person’s face.

“We are out here to allow people like this to do this,” Jumaane Williams addressed the camera, referring to the counterprotesters’ actions as they followed him and emphasizing the importance of free speech.

Earlier in the day separate group of protesters gathered outside the New York State Attorney General’s Office at 28 Liberty Street for an emergency “Hands Off Letitia James” speak-out organized by Refuse Fascism NYC. The demonstration followed the federal indictment of New York Attorney General Letitia James on charges of bank fraud and making false statements to a financial institution, filed by a grand jury in Virginia on October 9.
