Rideshare Driver Found Shot in Head in Bronx, Marking NYC’s First Homicide of 2026
January 1, 2026 | Mount Hope, Bronx — A rideshare driver was found dead inside his vehicle early Thursday morning in what police believe is New York City’s first homicide of 2026.
Firefighters responding to reports of a car fire near Morris Avenue and the Cross Bronx Expressway discovered a 55-year-old man inside the vehicle with gunshot wounds to the head, according to authorities.
The incident occurred just before 6:55 a.m. in the Mount Hope section of the Bronx. The victim was shot twice in the head and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Officials confirmed the man was working as a rideshare driver at the time, though it remains unclear whether a passenger was involved. No arrests have been announced.

Around 7:59 a.m., NYPD from the 44th Precinct responded to gunfire at 161st St & Grand Concourse. Two men were shot. One is in critical condition, the other stable.
A firearm and shell casings were recovered at the scene. Investigation ongoing.
Fatal hit-and-run overnight: Around 4:07 a.m., NYPD from the 115th Precinct responded to 102nd St & 37th Ave after a white SUV struck two pedestrians while traveling southbound, then fled.
One pedestrian was killed at the scene. A 24-year-old man was taken to a hospital in critical condition. Investigation ongoing.
