A 20-year veteran detective with the NYPD Emergency Service Unit was shot in the shoulder while serving a warrant at a Lower East Side NYCHA complex during which a barricaded suspect opened fire upon officers, officials said.

Officers with the specialized police unit converged onto the Vladeck Houses at 384 Madison Street just after 5:00 a.m., in an attempt to extricate an armed individual who barricaded himself inside the Madison Street housing development.

Police say the suspect who is a convicted felon with an extensive criminal record for multiple priors of gun possession and narcotics fired several shots through the door of his residence to begin an hours-long standoff. No one was initially struck and officers did not immediately return fire, cops said.

According to officials, a police negotiator was brought in to communicate with the suspect who for hours stayed barricaded inside of the residence.

At around 8:30 a.m., the suspect again started shooting, this time striking a veteran detective in the shoulder. Police returned fire, wounding the shooter, who was immediately taken into custody.

Both the officer and suspect were transported by EMS to Bellevue Hospital for further treatment of non life threatening injuries.
