Luis Peroza sentenced to 10 years in PRISON for assaulting 90-year-old owner of Ray’s Candy Store and two others

February 7 2024 MANHATTAN, New York – Luis Peroza has been sentenced to PRISON for assaulting 90-year-old owner of Ray’s Candy Store ad two others.

Peroza has been sentenced to ten years in state prison for assaulting three men in East Village NYC on February 2 2023.

“Luis Peroza has been held accountable for viciously assaulting three individuals in just one day,” said District Attorney Bragg. “Among those attacked was the beloved owner of Ray’s Candy Store, who despite the attack, has shown great courage and resilience by returning to work and continuing to spread joy – as he has for decades. I hope that this sentencing can bring a sense of justice and relief for each of the victims.”

Luis Peroza, 39-year-old, has been arrested and charged with assault this Friday, after attacking 90-year-old owner of Ray’s Candy Store, breaking multiple bones in victim’s face, police said.

90-year-old Ray, owner of Ray’s Candy, confirms he has multiple broken bones in his face and a dislocated jaw after a brutal attack outside of his Manhattan store. He previously refused medical attention.

Incident happened early Thursday morning just after 3am, when victim Ray Alvarez, owner of Ray’s Candy Store, was viciously attacked.

According to police reports, Ray stepped out of his candy shop for some “fresh air” and was attacked by a man swinging a rock attached to a belt.

Suspect, who was carrying a package, approached the 90-year-old victim and asked him if he wanted to buy it. When the Ray asked him what was inside, the suspect told another male to hold his package and told the victim he was going to kill him, striking him on the left side of his head and face with belt and heavy rock, police said.

Suspect swung the rock, striking the 90-year-old in the face leaving him with a black eye and laceration to the head but was not seriously injured and he refused to go to a hospital, saying “I will be OK”

Ray’s Candy Store has been operating and open 24hrs a day since 1974 at 113 Avenue A and is a East Village staple. Owner Ray says he will retire in ten years at the age of 100.



The alleged attacker fled down Avenue A. No arrests at this time.
