Deadly Midtown Attack: NYPD Officer Killed, Gunman Shoots 5 Before Taking Own Life
July 28, 2025 – MIDTOWN, Manhattan, New York — Six people are dead after a gunman opened fire inside a Midtown high-rise Monday evening, killing an NYPD officer and four civilians before taking his own life.
According to police, the first 911 call came in at 6:28 p.m. The gunman, carrying a rifle and wearing a bulletproof vest, exited a black BMW and entered the lobby of a 44-story skyscraper on Park Avenue that houses Blackstone, the NFL, and Rudin Management offices.
Inside the lobby, he opened fire, hitting multiple people, including NYPD Officer Didarul Islam, 36, who was working a paid detail for Rudin Properties. Islam, a father of two with a third child on the way, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Sources say the gunman also shot a woman hiding behind a pillar and a security agent in the elevator lobby. A woman exiting the elevator was spared, the gunman allowed her to flee unharmed.
He then used the elevator to reach the 33rd floor, where he fatally shot another person inside an office belonging to Rudin Management before turning the gun on himself.
Witnesses reported hearing what sounded like high-capacity automatic gunfire. Police say the shooter Shane Tamura had a history of serious mental health issues before deadly NYC shooting
In total, six people are dead: four civilians, Officer Islam, and the shooter. One additional person was shot in the back and is hospitalized.
The NYPD has identified the officer killed during today’s attack as 36yr old Didarul Islam. Officer Islam was with the department for 4 years, had 2 kids and his wife is 8 months pregnant.
Two individuals — a man and a woman — were taken into custody at the scene. While arrests occurred at the scene, they are unrelated to the incident.
