BLIZZARD BATTERS NYC: Travel Ban Issued as Trees Fall, Plow Sinks Near City Hall
February 23, 2026, NEW YORK, NY – A powerful winter storm brought heavy snowfall and strong winds to New York City on Monday, prompting officials to issue a travel ban on non-essential travel as conditions deteriorated across the five boroughs.
Snow began overnight and intensified through the morning. At times, snowfall rates exceeded one inch per hour, significantly reducing visibility and making roadways difficult to navigate. Wind gusts contributed to drifting snow and whiteout conditions in exposed areas.
City officials enacted the travel ban during the height of the storm, restricting road use to emergency vehicles, essential workers, and authorized drivers. The measure was intended to keep roadways clear for snow removal and emergency response operations.
A Department of Sanitation snow plow became lodged in a collapsed section of pavement near City Hall, above the decommissioned City Hall subway station. The vehicle remained partially embedded in the ground as crews assessed the situation.
Tree crashes near mom and child – West 51st Street – The tree appeared to give way under the weight of accumulated snow. Video shows the pair walking moments before the trunk falls onto the sidewalk behind them. No injuries were reported in the incident.
Downed trees were reported in multiple neighborhoods as heavy, wet snow accumulated throughout the day. Awning collapsed in Borough Park Brooklyn.
Crowds gathered in Washington Square Park shortly after snowfall tapered off for a Sidetalk Snowball Fight.
Multiple trees were reported down in Manhattan neighborhoods including Chelsea and SoHo. Footage shows vehicles damaged by falling branches and streets partially blocked by debris. Heavy snow accumulation combined with wind gusts contributed to tree failures across the city.
The Times Square street performer known as the “Naked Cowboy” was seen performing during active snowfall despite blizzard conditions. Video shows him interacting with passersby in limited visibility.
